The Numbers - A brief summary:
Estimated 16-18 million diabetics -
and the numbers grow as the population ages.
Complications increase with age, duration
and severity of the condition. Decreased circulation and decreased
sensitivity lead to infection and ulceration. Diabetic complications
are the leading cause of lower extremity amputation. Five to fifteen
percent of diabetics will have some level of amputation. Approximate
medical cost of below the knee (BK) amputation: $65,000.00. Indirect
Cost - billions: Disability, rehabilitation and lost future production.
THE GOOD NEWS - technology, education
and treatment prevents complications. Regular - general medical
evaluation and management is a critical prevention factor. Must
do - strict compliance with medication schedules, exercise and weight
management. Must do - early detection and treatment of eye, kidney
and extremity problems.
REGULAR FOOT CARE SERVICES - avert
complications.
Most insurance plans, including Medicare/Medicaid
pay for preventive care. Podiatrists are the medical and surgical
diabetic foot care specialists. Avoid pedicures, nail technicians
and "pseudo-foot specialists." No cut, puncture or skin
abrasion is considered minor in a diabetic. Any skin, nail or joint
infection must be treated promptly and aggressively. Foot ulcers
can be healed - and avoided - with proper inserts and shoes. Don't
wait to see if it will get better ...prevent complications!
